Sharkey and Robertson are doubts for Annan

Annan have doubts over Stewart Sharkey and Willie Robertson for their clash with Motherwell.

The Galabank side went down 2-0 to hosts Rangers in midweek and despite the scoreline, manager Jim Chapman is looking for a similar performance.

He said: "We stood up to a really fast-working Rangers side well and I am proud of the organisation that the players displayed. They have set a standard which is very high and I want Annan to hit that standard again.

"Motherwell is another great test but if we play like we did at Ibrox I will be pleased as it will show a level of consistency."

Meanwhile, Motherwell goalkeeper Craig Samson is happy to fight for his place with Dean Brill - but he does not want another season playing second fiddle.

Samson was a surprise signing for Motherwell in September last year, with on-loan Middlesbrough goalkeeper Connor Ripley performing well.

The former St Mirren and Kilmarnock player had to bide his time on the sidelines before being handed two starts late in the campaign by Mark McGhee.

But his patience was rewarded after signing a new contract when he started against Rangers in Motherwell's Betfred Cup opener, despite the arrival of former Inverness number one Dean Brill.

"The club needed another goalkeeper in and it was always going to be one coming in with a bit of experience and one they believed that the two of us could push each other on, which is good for competition," Samson said ahead of Saturday's trip to Annan.

"Jim Holman, the goalkeeping coach, told me Dean was the goalkeeper coming in. The two of us work together well and get on well. We both want to be playing but luckily on Saturday the manager gave me the nod. It's down to me now to keep doing well but I know Dean is pushing hard in the background."

The former Scotland squad player added: "I spoke to the manager at the end of the season and said if he was going to bring someone else in on loan, it probably wouldn't have been for me. I would rather have gone to play somewhere.

"But knowing he was bringing another goalkeeper in permanently, then that's when you know you are fighting for a place.

"I want to play. I am not here to sit on the bench. People last year maybe thought I was happy just sitting there but you are not, you want to play every game, and this is a big year for me. I want to do well and push on in my career again."

McGhee could give Louis Moult one last run-out from the bench ahead of his groin surgery next week, while another forward, Jacob Blyth, has been troubled by an Achilles knock.
